3 Things To Do at The Beginning Of The Month That Help With Self-Care

We have all heard about the importance of self-care in order to have the strength, endurance, and joyful disposition to care for others. 

Personally, I believe that self-care is an important and key factor in homemaking.  I believe this based on the sheer amount of time that we give of ourselves to others.

I love being a full-time homemaker because I can devote my time to serving my family, friends, and community.  However, in order to do that, I know that I need to be refreshed with my sanity intact. 

Girlfriend, I need self-care!

I personally practice self-care on a daily basis in several small ways.  I usually treat myself to a short nap in the middle of the day, when needed.  Another favorite indulgence is quietly spending time behind closed doors for an hour or so, just for me. 

Even though these simple pleasures do the trick for me as a daily refresher, there are other self-care tasks that I find helpful when they are scheduled.

I’d like to share three simple tips with you:

Tip #1. Get Organized.

I like to sit down at the beginning of each month with my trusty Happy Planner and jot down important dates that I need to remember.  Birthdates, holidays (planning ideas), and “things to do” that I don’t want to forget.  I also like to go through and do my meal plan for the week. 

I love the Farmhouse Classic Happy Planner that I currently have because it has a great dashboard where I can document what I’m currently reading, listening to, watching, loving, etc.  Here’s a look at the inside of mine.  It’s nice to have the memory for later on…I’m nostalgic like that, what can I say…ha!

I also like to go through and write out any extra expenses that we may have for the month or activities that we’d like to include.

While doing this, I can also identify any goals that I may have for the month such as starting a DIY project, spending more time with the Mister, or being sure to catch up with an old friend. 

I like to take my planner where ever I go.  Therefore by default, I have to clean my purse out at the beginning of each month.  I have the cutest little pouch that I like to keep my receipts and checkbook in, but sometimes, those pesky receipts just don’t find their way in there.  Before I know it, they are all over the place and I’m shuffling through a sea of them to find what I’m looking for.  A monthly purge helps me to keep this issue at bay and makes Mama very happy!

I find that just by organizing my purse and planner, I feel less stress and can think clearly about the direction I’m going in for the upcoming month.

Tip #2.  Indulgent Hair and Body Care.

Washing and deep conditioning your hair.  Now I’m not sure if this is just an African-American thing, but deep conditioning my curls is a must.  However, it can be a time-consuming process for my natural curls.  If your hair texture doesn’t require this, go ahead and pamper your hair in the way that’s best for you. 

What I like about an indulgent hair and body care routine is that you can focus on the things that you don’t always get a chance too… after all, we are BUSY homemakers!

In addition to hair care, I like to use a homemade exfoliating scrub to give my skin a fresh, youthful look and to keep dry skin and bay.  Not to mention it just feels good!  I like to find different types of exfoliating recipes on Pinterest and give them a try.  Here is a list of 20 you may like!

I also like to take some time and show my face and neck some love.  Now I know you may think this a little old-fashioned of me, but I am in LOVE with Mary Kay’s skin care products.  My grandmother used Mary Kay as well as my mother and they looked amazing all of the time.  As a matter of fact, they always seemed to look 10-15 years younger than they were…always!

I like to do a facial with the Microdermabrasion at least once per month and I think that has the biggest impact on my skin.  There are other products that I adore and think help keep my skin youthful and glowing.

I won’t go into depth about it here, but let me know in the comment section if you’d like me to write a post on my monthly skincare routine.

In addition to my hair and facial routine, I also enjoy making homemade body butter to keep my arms and legs silky smooth.  I use a basic shea butter, olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil mixture, whipped to a creamy fluffy texture and then add a few drops of lavender essential oil and rosemary.  Devine!

After completing my hair and body routine, I feel ready to take on anything.  I feel confident, refreshed and beautiful.  Now, I will warn you that if you do all of these things on the same day, you will feel exhausted after all of it.  I usually plan my indulgent hair and body routine on a day when I’m not doing anything else afterward. 

Tip #3.  Set A Goal

Goals are great!  They help to stretch us, motivate us, and provide us with something to strive for.  I like to invest in a monthly goal.  The beginning of the month is the perfect time to do this. 

Your goal may be something personal, like reading that book you’d been meaning to get too.  It may be getting your nails done each week, learning to bake bread from scratch, schedule weekly play dates for the kids (and get to visit with some other moms), or investing in getting closer to your husband. 

The goal may be something for the home such as, starting a remodeling project or creating comfortable vignettes throughout your home, it could be something as simple as organizing the pantry, or a kitchen drawer. 

Whatever your goal objectives, go ahead and commit to one and write it down in your planner.  I don’t usually follow any fancy method for planning my goals such as SMART goals, but if that is something you prefer, here’s the link to a nice one. 

I prefer to write the goal in my planner and then assign a completion date.  If the goal is somewhat in-depth, I may break down my goal into bite-sized pieces and then assign myself weekly progress updates.

I also write out a list of supplies, items, services, and/or people that I may need to help me reach my goal. 

Once you have it all worked out, you’re all set to move forward towards your success. 

Now, sometimes I will set a goal that I thought I could get done in a months time, but it just doesn’t happen.  That’s okay.  I simply add it to the next month and keep it moving. 

I strongly believe in generously providing grace, and that means to ourselves.  This is not “another thing to do” type of goal.  These goals are usually something that I look forward too.  No one is forcing me to do them and I see them as an opportunity for self-growth and/or enhancing my home and workspace, which benefits me and my family.  The last thing I need is something else to beat myself up about.
